Christ Community Church takes communion once a month as a faith family during worship at 9 a.m., 103 W. Corning Avenue, Peotone, IL.
We encourage all who plan to take communion to spend time with the Lord in a spirit of humility and prayer for the purpose of being spiritually ready to receive communion.
Below is a sample outline using the A.C.T.S. model of prayer (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) if you want some guidance on how to do this.
STEP ONE: Schedule a time, put it on your calendar and keep the appointment as if you were meeting with an important dignitary because if you think about it, you are.
STEP TWO: Find a quiet, private and comfortable place to have uninterrupted and focused time with the Lord. Your favorite spot in your living room or office or even your car if necessary.
STEP THREE: 5 minutes - ADORATION Opening Prayer: Come before the Lord in total submission and humility. Acknowledge who He is and who you are before Him. He is God. We are not. He is the Creator and we are His created beings. Read and pray through scripture that adores God for who He is. Here are some samples:
Psalm 96:4-9 Gives glory to the Lord's name and worships him in holiness.
Psalm 150:1-6 Praises God in his sanctuary and heavens, for his mighty deeds.
Psalm 103:6,8 Praises the Lord for being compassionate, gracious, and slow to anger.
STEP FOUR: 5 minutes - CONFESSION Prayer: Spend time confessing your sin to the Lord. Remember 1John 1:9 teaches that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness. Spend a few minutes meditating on the miraculous forgiveness of almighty God. Agree with Him that sin is wrong and know that He can and does forgive us fully. Name your sins and also ask the Holy Spirit to bring sins to mind that you need to confess.
STEP FIVE: 5 minutes - THANKSGIVING Prayer: Give God almighty the thanks that is due Him for the blessings in life. Thank Him for salvation, for the local church, for prayer, for his provisions and protection. Thank Him for family and friends, for shelter, healthcare and food. Thank Him for all things. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
STEP SIX: 5 minutes - SUPPLICATION Prayer: Ask God for whatever is on your heart. God already knows your every need, but now is the time to pour our your cares and concerns to Him. Pray for yourself, your family, friends, church, local community, and more.
Try this. Try spending 20 minutes of carved out time before the Lord in prayer prior to receiving communion and just see if the Lord moves you in a fresh new way. The ACTS model of prayer has been around for many years and it's just one of many ways to pray. Hope you find it helpful.
