'Caught short’: London’s loos since the 1960s

Dan and Simon will look at the impact of toilets on public life over the past sixty years. As well as serving the important function of providing a safe and private place to pee, the khazi has also been closely associated with sexual encounters, vandalism and the illegal use of drugs. Why, over the past six decades, the number of public conveniences has declined will be explored through ideas about people's shifting identities and the public/private dichotomy, and (of course!) by frequent recourse to toilet humour.

Our speakers:

Dr Dan Weinbren has published a range of social, mutual and business histories. His subjects have included local history societies, strike songs, the Royal Small Arms Factory, the Labour Party and the Oddfellows. He also wrote (2014).

Simon Fowler has some 30 years’ experience as an archivist, historian and genealogist and has written and lectured on a wide variety of subjects, including pubs and workhouses. He is currently writing a PhD on the history of tourism.

Simon and Dan are the co-authors of (2018).
