Cathedral Concert: Tennessee Wind Symphony
About this Event
The Cathedral Concert Series is honored to welcome the Tennessee Wind Symphony for an evening celebrating songs that shape our lives, preserve our history, and connect us across generations.
A songbook is more than a collection of melodies: it is a record of memory. It holds the songs of childhood, faith, family, celebration, struggle, hope, and home. This concert journeys through several musical songbooks, from Renaissance England and the American South to the Broadway and jazz traditions of George Gershwin and the profound legacy of African American spirituals.
The program opens with the centuries-old The Earle of Oxford’s March, followed by Donald Grantham’s Southern Harmony, inspired by the rich tradition of American shape-note singing. Gershwin’s beloved Someone to Watch Over Me offers a timeless melody that has found a place in countless generations of listeners.
The concert concludes with Benjamin Horne’s Spiritual Symphony, drawing upon African American spirituals—songs born from faith, resilience, suffering, and hope that have become an essential part of America’s musical heritage.
Together, these works remind us that music is how we remember. Songs preserve stories, carry traditions forward, and give voice to the experiences that shape who we are.
Join the Tennessee Wind Symphony for an evening of music that invites you to hear something familiar, discover something new, and remember the songs that have become part of your own story.
