A culturally-inspired craft-based event of reflection and collective care.
About this Event

Cathartic Crafts is a free, hands-on art experience that invites a diverse community of creatives to connect through remembrance and reverence. Grounded in Connected Creatives’ assertion that the arts and artists heal and belief that creativity is a birthright, this gathering embraces accessible artistic expression as pathways to healing and shared understanding.

The experience draws on rich, enduring elements of Latino art and culture, including ofrendas, textile arts, and vibrant color usage.

We will begin with a performance by cultural organization , followed by a collective conversation led by cultural strategist and art therapist Michelle Fernandez (founder of La Bodeguita) on the importance of honoring community complexities and the healing power of hands-on creating.

Guests will then use pre-curated black-and-white photos of luminaries in Latino culture to create mixed-media fabric collages inspired by the incredible work of Mexican artist , embellishing the portraits with colorful, textured layers that express revered remembrance and celebration. In recognition of Día de los Muertos, participants will also learn about the tradition and share moments of gratitude for loved ones and cultural legacies.

About Connected Creatives

Cathartic Crafts is the fourth event of Connected Creatives, a five-part series designed to support the well-being of Charlotte-based artists and creatives – generously sponsored by the City of Charlotte through Charlotte is Creative. Rooted in the belief that healthy artists strengthen a city’s cultural landscape, the program brings creatives together through free public workshops that provide tools for enhanced mental and emotional health.

Each session in Connected Creatives blends self-care activities such as yoga, meditation, breathwork, journaling, and more with hands-on art-making and intentional conversation. Participants gain practical tools for wellness while building meaningful connections and support networks.

Centered on authentic exchange and mutual care, Connected Creatives helps cultivate resilient, empowered artists across disciplines and backgrounds.
