Catharsis: A Community Co-Regulation & Emotional Release Experience
About this Event
Most of us were never taught what to do when emotions get big—our own or someone else's.
What do you do when your partner is angry? Your child is melting down? A friend is grieving? A coworker is panicking? Someone you love is overwhelmed and you have absolutely no idea what to say?
We give advice. Try to fix it. Tell them everything will be okay. Absorb their emotions ourselves. Get overwhelmed too. Or pull away.
What if, instead, you could become someone others actually feel safer with when emotions are running high?
Catharsis is an experiential workshop in emotional regulation, co-regulation, and human connection. You'll start by learning to work with your own emotional state, then have the option to practice being a grounded, emotionally safe presence with others.
You can learn to become someone others feel emotionally safe with.
These skills can deepen connection across your life—with partners, friends, children, family members, coworkers, clients, and communities.
Who This Is For
Catharsis may be for you if you'd like to...
- Stay grounded when your partner is upset instead of becoming defensive, shutting down, or giving unsolicited advice
- Be the parent who can remain present through a child's big emotions without getting swept into them
- Support a friend through grief, heartbreak, anxiety, or overwhelm
- Handle a challenging boss, coworker, or stressful interaction without carrying it for the rest of your day
- Navigate conflict without losing connection to yourself or the other person
- Notice when stress, doomscrolling, or the emotional atmosphere around you is pulling you off center
- Stop absorbing everyone else's emotional state
- Receive support instead of always being the strong one
- Build greater capacity for vulnerability, intimacy, and authentic connection
You don't need to be struggling to benefit.
These are fundamental skills for relationships, parenting, friendship, leadership, caregiving—and simply navigating a stressful world.
What You'll Learn
We'll start with the most important nervous system you have influence over: your own.
Then we'll explore how your presence can affect the experience of the people around you.
You'll practice:
- Recognizing when you're becoming emotionally activated
- Grounding yourself before responding to someone else
- Staying present when another person's emotions become intense
- Helping someone feel safer, more grounded, and better able to navigate what they're feeling
- Using breath, body, voice, attention, and presence to support regulation
- Recognizing what's yours and what belongs to the other person
- Creating greater emotional safety in relationships
- Receiving support instead of always managing everything yourself
- Returning to yourself after emotionally charged interactions
Comfort isn't necessarily the goal. Capacity is.
Being emotionally safe doesn't mean making sure another person never feels uncomfortable. It means developing the capacity to stay grounded, present, and connected when difficult emotions arise—your own or someone else's.
Sometimes co-regulation produces deep relaxation. Sometimes it creates enough safety for grief, fear, vulnerability, or something you've been holding back to emerge. Sometimes it allows you to venture outside your usual comfort zone while remaining grounded.
We're not trying to make you feel a certain way.
We're creating conditions in which you can safely experience more of what's already there—and learn to help others do the same.
You'll Leave With
- Practical tools for navigating stress, overwhelm, conflict, grief, and emotionally charged situations
- Greater awareness of your own emotional patterns and nervous system
- More confidence being the grounded person when someone you care about is struggling
- Tools for creating greater emotional safety in your relationships
- Experience both giving and receiving co-regulation and emotional support
- Greater awareness of when you're taking on someone else's emotional state—and how to return to yourself
- Skills you can use with partners, friends, children, family members, coworkers, and clients
- A felt experience of co-regulation—not just an intellectual understanding of it
- And quite possibly a few new people you're genuinely glad you met
What to Expect
We start with you.
Before you're invited to practice anything with another person, you'll learn ways to notice and work with your own emotional state.
From there, you'll have the option to explore guided co-regulation practices with others at whatever level of participation feels right for you.
This isn't a two-hour lecture. You'll learn primarily through experience and practice.
The workshop may include:
- Grounding and self-regulation practices
- Emotional awareness and release exercises
- Attuned listening and presence
- Breath, body language, and voice as tools for regulation
- Practices for staying connected without absorbing another person's emotions
- Optional partner and small-group co-regulation exercises
- Optional, consent-based supportive touch
- Opportunities to both give and receive co-regulation
- Time for reflection, connection, and integration
Everything is guided step-by-step.
What Is "Catharsis"?
The word can sound dramatic.
Catharsis doesn't have to be.
Sometimes it's tears. Sometimes it's laughter. Sometimes it's finally saying something out loud. Sometimes it's simply realizing how much tension you've been carrying—and allowing yourself to put it down.
There is no particular emotional experience you're supposed to have.
Catharsis is about creating space for authentic emotional experience. Whatever genuinely arises is perfect.
Why Co-Regulation?
Humans don't experience emotions entirely in isolation. Our brains and bodies respond to the people around us, and research on supportive social connection and touch has found relationships with stress, emotional state, and physiological regulation.
It's part of why being around a grounded person can sometimes help us settle—and why someone else's stress can sometimes seem contagious.
We'll touch briefly on what's happening in the nervous system, but this isn't a neuroscience class.
You don't need to understand the biology to learn the skill.
The emphasis is on experiencing co-regulation for yourself and learning how to bring it into everyday life.
What You Need to Know
- No partner required. Come by yourself or with others.
- No previous experience required.
- Participation is invitational. Participate, modify an exercise, choose a different level of connection, or observe.
- Consent is central. Your boundaries remain yours throughout the experience.
- Authenticity is encouraged. There's no particular way you're expected to feel or respond. You're invited to notice and honor whatever is genuinely present for you.
YOUR FACILITATOR
Nicole Cruz has been working in personal development and coaching since 2013, helping people build healthier relationships with themselves and others.
Her background spans holistic health, education, and behavior change — and over time, her work has moved increasingly into the body: how we regulate, how we connect, and what gets in the way of both.
She is a Certified Trauma-Informed Coach and trained in emotional co-regulation, with additional study in attachment, relationship skills, and facilitating experiential practice containers. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching and a certification in Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching.
Nicole's approach is grounded, practical, and person-centered. She doesn't offer scripts or formulas — she helps people develop the awareness and capacity to actually be present with others.
This workshop is an extension of that work.
