Carving the Grand Canyon: Ideas, Old and New

While much of the history of the earth is decipherable from the record of the rocks in the Grand Canyon, the timing and processes of the exposure of those rocks, the carving of the canyon itself, is elusive. This is because much of the evidence has been eroded away! Geologists from John Wesley Powell on, have proposed ideas to explain this enigmatic “hole in the ground”. Join Dr. Jeffrey Meyer in this talk, which will review many of these ideas and present a couple of new research contributions, one of which is in progress by the author himself, in collaboration with Wayne Ranney.

Dr. Jeffrey Meyer studied a 24-million-year-old super volcano in New Mexico for his PhD. For 28 years, he was a teacher, predominantly at Santa Barbara City College. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Prescott into a home that her parents built and lived in. He has kept active in geology, teaching a few courses at Prescott College, mapping the Bonito Flow at Sunset Crater, and recently interpreting some perplexing features at the Grand Canyon. He’d like to share with you what these puzzling features are and what they might mean about when and how the canyon was carved.
