Carve, Paint & Print – Provincetown Whiteline
Schedule
Wed, 08 Oct, 2025 at 10:30 am
UTC+01:00Location
Barningham Village Hall, County Durham DL11 7DW | Richmond, EN
Using soft Japanese wood, the design is outlined with a small gouge, creating the white line that defines and separates each colour. These gouges are easy to use and the carving is simple. The wood surface is then painted with ordinary paintbrushes and watercolour paints.
Japanese bamboo paper is laid over the wood, and the wet paint transfers into the fibres by pressing with a wooden spoon or Japanese baren. Prints can be soft and delicate or bold and vibrant, depending on how the block is painted. The woodgrain adds texture and interest. Areas can be painted and printed multiple times to build up layers and gradations.
Julie will demonstrate how Provincetown whiteline differs from traditional Mokuhanga Japanese woodblock.
No painting or carving experience is required. You can bring your own design or create one on the day. Julie will also bring plenty of ideas to choose from. The maximum print size is 15 x 20cm, or smaller at 11.5 x 16.5cm to fit a greetings card.
You’ll leave with one or more unique prints, a blank greetings card, your woodblock, and the skills to continue at home.
