A talk by Paul Frecker author of Cartomania and a leading collector and expert in carte de visite - the small photographic images that became a craze in the 19th century
This talk will be of interest to those who want to know more about the early development of photography the social history of collecting and society in the 19th century and the story of Napoleon lll.
Napoleon lll played a significant role in popularising the use of photography. He used the new technology of photography for his political PR . Images taken of the Imperial family and published in the small card format of carte de visite were a catalyst for a craze that swept 19th century society.
There is a small exhibition of 2nd Empire photography supporting this talk. There will be the opportunity for visitors to look around Camden Place the Grade ll* house that was home to the Imperial family.
