Carpentry Level 2: Framing, Layout & Building Skills
Advertisement
Carpentry Level II is where the basics start turning into real building skills.
Designed for students who already have some foundational carpentry experience, this course focuses on becoming more confident, accurate, and independent with the tools and techniques used in framing and structural construction.
Students will work with a variety of hand and power tools, with particular emphasis on the speed square and miter saw, including layout, angles, and compound miter cuts. They’ll also learn how framing systems come together through hands-on exercises in walls, roofs, openings, and other structural elements.
Whenever possible, students will put those skills to work on our ongoing Tiny House project, gaining experience on a real structure and seeing how individual components fit into the larger building process. The course will also include stand-alone exercises—such as building a roof-framing mock-up inside the workshop—so students can practice layout, cuts, angles, and assembly in a focused setting.
Along the way, students will build a stronger understanding of project layout, lumber selection, measuring and cutting accurately, framing methods, tool use, and the sequence of constructing a building from the ground up.
Whether your goal is to build a tiny house, shed, studio, full-size home, or simply understand your own house well enough to tackle repairs and improvements, Carpentry Level II is designed to move you from basic familiarity toward real working confidence.
This course includes 8 evening classes, meeting twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30–8:30 PM at Mill Hollow Works, 149 Hurricane Road, Keene, NH. Instruction is hands-on and guided by a professional carpenter.
