Carnivorous Ping Rock Gardens

We will be mounting three different species of Butterwort (Pinguicula) to a medium-sized lava rock. Attendees will source their own container. Check local thrift stores or goodwill. Container can range in size of 6-9 inches wide and 1-3 inches deep. Make sure it doesn't have any drain holes and the container is made of glass, plastic or glazed ceramic. This way, you can be more creative with your container! I will supply the soil, rock, and plants. In addition to the three butterworts, I will supply sundew seeds and a small amount of terestrial bladderwort (Utricularia)that will spread through the soil and produce beautiful flowers. During the class, I will go over care instructions so your ping rock can thrive at home!

Note: Butterworts are going to start out small (quarter to half dollar size) to allow the roots to grow into the rock. If the plants are too large, they are difficult to mount.

Care: Pinguicula grow best in moderately bright, partly sunny conditions, such as an east or west facing window. You can also use 18-24w LED grow lights placed about 12 inches from the plant. They like moderate to high humidity but will adapt to lower humidity. When watering, use rain water, distilled water, or RO water. Water your ping rock every 2-3 days(give or take). Never let your rock garden dry out completely.

Parking - For free 2 hour validated parking, you can park across the street from us at the Remington Row Garage.
