💃🏾 Opera Arlington presents Bizet’s iconic opera, CARMEN, its unforgettable melodies reimagined in 1920s Spain... where a nation’s football triumph sends celebration rippling through streets alive with passion, volatility, and dangerous desire.🌟 With the FIFA World Cup casting its global spotlight on Arlington, this Carmen is reimagined amid the restless energy of a nation gripped by the far-reaching passions of “the beautiful game.”
Bizet’s legendary score surges with heat, color, and raw emotion, brought vividly to life by DFW’s opera stars, in collaboration with the Mansfield Philharmonic under the baton of Eldred Marshall. Directed by Eliza Escalante and presented in the original French with English supertitles, this bold new production asks what it means to live freely... no matter the cost.
THE DRAMA:
In a nation electrified by victory, where celebration spills into the streets and heroes are made overnight, passion burns just as fiercely off the pitch. Carmen—fiercely independent, magnetic, and unbound by convention—lives life on her own terms in a society that demands otherwise. When Don José, a disciplined soldier shaped by duty and tradition, is pulled into her orbit, their connection ignites with dangerous intensity. What begins as desire spirals into obsession, as freedom and control collide with devastating consequences.
Enter Escamillo, reimagined as a swaggering football icon fresh from scoring Spain’s winning goal. Idolized by thousands, he thrives in the spotlight: bold, charismatic, and impossible to ignore. As loyalties shift and tensions rise, the line between devotion and destruction begins to blur.
