Cardiac Defects and Repairs

DESCRIPTION

  • This course equips healthcare professionals with the specialized knowledge and skills required to care for cardiac patients in the ICU, including advanced hemodynamic monitoring techniques, recognition and management of post-operative complications, and critical emergency interventions.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Define cardiac output and the variables that affect cardiac output.
  • Differentiate the different classes of medications administered to the cardiac population.
  • Describe the process of cardiopulmonary bypass and the potential implications of bypass post-operatively in cardiac patients.
  • Identify common post-operative complications after cardiac surgery.
  • Discuss invasive hemodynamic monitoring in relation to the patient's cardiac status.
  • Identify common causes and types of arrhythmias.
  • Understand different types and components of external pacing.
  • Identify the different roles in a code and what medications are used in code situations.
  • Understand the role of the clinical support nurse in the CVICU.
  • Discuss common reasons for CVICU code events.
  • Describe reasons for and different types of ECMO support.
  • Demonstrate competencies to care for patients with: advanced hemodynamic monitoring capabilities and during emergency situations.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

This continuing education (CE) course is offered through Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford by the Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPEI). Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), Provider Number 9713.

Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry is accredited as provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).

  • Number of BRN Contact Hours: PENDING
  • Number of ANCC Contact Hours: PENDING

Nurses:

  • While CA BRN credits are accepted for your RN license renewal, ANCC credits may only apply to specific certifications. To ensure your credits are valid, please verify with your state board or accrediting body whether they accept ANCC-approved continuing education.

Other Medical Professionals:

  • Contact your professional board to determine if they accept continuing education (CE) credits approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Earning CE Credits

  • To be eligible for Continuing Education (CE) credits, participants are required to attend the entire course or event and complete the course evaluation. Partial credit cannot be granted for late arrivals or early departures.

Certificate Issuance and Record Keeping

  • CE certificates will be distributed within 30 days of course completion. Participants are responsible for maintaining their personal records of accrued CE documentation. Certificates must be retained for four years following the course date and are valid for a single use toward registered nurse license renewal.

REGISTRATION and FEES

  • Stanford Children's Employees (with CE credits) = $50 (plus service fees)
  • Stanford Children's Employees (with no CE credits) = FREE
  • General Admission (with CE credits) = $60 (plus service fees)
  • For employment verification, please register using your Stanford work email and employee ID number.
  • The Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPE&I) accepts card payments ONLY for course fees and materials. Transfer of Funds are no longer accepted. Employees seeking reimbursement for educational expenses must obtain their manager's approval through Bright Horizon. Employees must submit proof of completion and receipts upon completion of a course in order to be reimbursed. Click for Reimbursement Guidelines.

CHANGES ON REGISTRATION

  • Log in to with the email address you used to register and manage your registration.
  • Join Waitlist: Please note that being on the waitlist does not guarantee enrollment to the course but it certainly increases your chances when an opening becomes available. Our waitlist is maintained on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon seat availability, you will be contacted automatically with further instructions on how to register.


CANCELLATION and REFUND
  • FULL REFUND for cancellations at least 2 weeks prior to class date.
  • NO REFUND for cancellations less than 5 days prior to class date.
  • For SCH Employees: NO SHOWS or cancellations on the day of class are considered unexcused absences. Managers will be notified. A medical note may be required in the event of illness or medical emergencies.
  • Cancellation by CPEI: Schedules, venues and details are subject to change and cancellation. Registered participants will be provided with as much advance notice as possible if this should occur. If CPEI cancels class, full refund will be given.
