Wednesdays, November 5, 12 and 19 from 5:30-7:15 p.m.
IN PERSON ONLY
Compassion can help us meet the suffering of the world with a warm and resilient heart. It spurs us to help, to act, and ultimately, to make the world a better place. It fuels connection and care. But sometimes, we struggle with it. At times, what we consider to be ‘compassion’ can feel overwhelming or painful. The Buddhist practice of karuna (the Pali word for compassion) helps us understand that we can feel deep compassion and wellbeing all at once.
In this three-week course we’ll explore how to meet suffering without losing our center and dive deeper into karuna as a liberating but at times misunderstood quality of heart.
Together, we will explore the ways that compassion practice can nourish and inspire our hearts and allow us to feel more whole and connected. We’ll learn to cultivate the inner conditions that allow compassion to flow with ease: safety and stability, mindful awareness, and the capacity to care without falling into empathic distress.
Each session will include formal meditation practice, Dharma reflections and relational mindfulness exercises to deepen your compassion practice in a way that nourishes rather than drains. This course is for anyone who longs to meet the suffering in our world without collapsing and is ready to ground their practice in a sense of deeper resilience and empowerment. It is suitable for new and experienced meditators alike.
COST: The fee for this class is on a sliding scale from $50 to $125. Scholarships are readily available through our online system at rates of $25 or $10. If you would like a scholarship of $0, please simply reach out to the registrar. No questions asked.

In turn, you are invited into the practice of dana, or generosity, a gift economy system that has been alive since the time of the Buddha. At any time, whether sporadically throughout the class or at the end, you are invited to make a donation or donations to support the teacher in continuing their valuable work. Donations in any amount whatsoever are gratefully received, and the practice of generosity is always elective.

ABOUT JULIANA SLOANE: Juliana first encountered the Dharma as a teenager, along with many of the beauties and challenges of practice. This led her to academic study of religion and gender, and ultimately, to pursue deeper practice and training in the Dharma. Over the years, Juliana has participated in Buddhist Chaplaincy training with the Sati Center, spent many years teaching with Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Family Program, and co-founded a weekly sitting group for those who identify as women. Juliana participated in the sixth iteration of Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leader Program in 2019 and completed this training with an 11-month Dharma Mentoring Program with Erin Treat and Pamela Weiss. Today, Juliana lives in Santa Fe, NM and works one-on-one with individuals as Dharma mentor, hypnotherapist and coach.
