Care Hanson brings a love of color and an intuitive, playful spirit to abstract expressive painting. Care’s paintings begin with random scribbles on the canvas. She paints without a set destination or plan, relying heavily on intuition and a spirit of ‘just try’. The canvas is layered and rotated until it rings true and feels ready for a title (the important final step). She values the creative process as a means of exploration, meditation and connection. Care prefers artwork that’s abstracted and a bit open ended, leaving room for interpretation and conversation with the viewer. In addition to acrylics on canvas, Care keeps her practice fresh with mixed media paintings on recycled box pieces, altered book art journals, nature mandalas, and simple stitching projects. She is a Cleveland native with a fine arts degree from BGSU. She moved with her husband & daughters to Stow in 1993, where the trails & parks continue to inspire her paintings. Painting took a backseat to family life and work as a job placement counselor until 2013, when she was able to ‘retire’ into daily creative play. Care is a member of Artists of Rubber City and the Ohio Collage Society. She has had solo exhibits and been in juried shows at Summit Artspace and White Rabbit Galleries. Care has also participated in group exhibitions at CVAC, Peninsula Art Academy & Artist Archives of the Western Reserve.
The Red Twig has long been one of her favorite spaces to share her paintings and she’s thrilled to join Susan Mentrak in a two women show.

Susan Mentrak, I’m a Military Wife. Mom. Eater of potato chips. Vacuumer of crumbs. I think a good sense of humor is healthy and that most people are comedically constipated. I went to the Columbus College of Art and Design and graduated in 1992 with an emphasis in illustration. I have been featured in Little Thing Magazine (China), interviewed by the NYT for my work with Spoonflower, contributed to two books by Lark Books and have been featured in several doll magazines, as well as many craft & design blogs over the years. Since 2016 I have been exploring a new medium to me - ceramics. I took a class at the local museum and I was hooked. It is interesting to see how I can incorporate my background in illustration into clay. I love storytelling and see each piece as a way to communicate my observations of the world. .
I teach ceramics at the Massillon Museum and the Canton Museum of Art.
