About this Event

If we want to do good work with communities, we need to let them decide what good looks like for them, but how do we do that in ethical ways? Join this session to learn how we can invite community voices into creative decision-making through co-creation, and what considerations that comes with for you as a professional about how you hold that space. How do you set up a space that cares for your participants, as well as for yourself? How do we work with communities in care-led and human-centred ways, that don’t expect an art professional to have to be a social worker too? This workshop will provide some ideas, examples and interactive activities to determine best practice in achieving balanced and care-full community engagement.

Culture Within Newham aims to shape, together with everyone, a culture in Newham that represents all of the diverse creative talent that sits within all of us. It hopes to inspire community-led change in how people in Newham access, make, experience and curate culture and creativity, and holds community voices and collective decision-making at the heart of everything it does, to let the dreams and desires of local residents shape its programme.

Stella Toonen is Programme Director of Culture Within Newham. Her background is in cultural engagement work and she has a PhD in community co-creation practices from King’s College London and Tate.
