About this Event
Join Besiana Liti, D.O., a board-certified non-invasive cardiologist, with the Elliot Heart and Vascular Center to learn about her specialty in cardio-oncology.
Dr. Liti, a cardiologist with the Elliot Heart and Vascular Center, will explain how her specialty field of cardio-oncology monitors and treats cancer patients during and after radiation and chemotherapy. She will also highlight the shared risk factors that increase the risk of both cardiac and cancer diagnosis. A question-and-answer session will follow.
“In the realm of non-invasive cardiology, a new field has opened up, which is cardio-oncology, a specialty in which cardiologists focus on taking care of patients’ cardiac needs who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for their cancers or patients who have had radiation treatment previously and need some form of assessment of their cardiac health,” she says. “We now know that people who have cancer have a higher risk of cardiac complications after treatment, while people with cardiac disease also have a higher risk of cancer because of shared risk factors, such as obesity and smoking.”
As Dr. Liti explained, with the establishment of cardio-oncology as a subspecialty, “we are now recognizing that cancer and its treatments are causing short-term and long-term cardiac complications.”
