Cardio for a Kause is an annual charity cardio-based event (row, ski, bike, etc.) dedicated to raising crucial funds and awareness for the early detection of Gastroparesis — a debilitating medical condition that paralyzes or significantly slows stomach emptying, leading to chronic malnutrition and life-threatening complications.
The Story Behind the Event
The event was created in 2021 by Brent Berger to honor the memory of his sister, Erika Berger.

• The Challenge: At age 14, Erika began experiencing debilitating symptoms. Because early detection tools were unavailable, her condition was misdiagnosed as an eating disorder.
• The Delayed Diagnosis: By the time she received an accurate diagnosis three years later, the damage to her body was irreversible. Despite fighting alongside medical experts for the remainder of her youth, Erika passed away at just 24 years old.
• The Legacy: Erika was a passionate, high-level athlete who loved fitness. Brent established this event to channel her love for exercise and her spirit of community into a force for common good.

Event Details & How to Participate

• Date & Timing: August 15, 2026. In Madison, the event will take place from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM. However, this four-hour block can be adjusted by anyone, anywhere to perfectly fit their local time zone.
• Meter Collection: All meter collection takes place on August 15th.
• Goal: Raise awareness for early Gastroparesis detection tools to prevent families from going through similar delayed diagnoses.
• Who Can Join: Participation is open to athletes and supporters of all fitness levels.
• Registration/Donation: There is a suggested $25 donation to participate.
