An immersive storytelling experience through a walk through Port Road and Car Street, where several communities, including the prominent Saraswat Brahmins, lived and traded. Our Car Street walk traces the history of the development of the Ratha Beedi (the path of the chariot) associated with the Venkatarama Temple, and its surroundings over the years.
The chief architects of the story are the Saraswat Brahmin community who migrated from Goa to Mangaluru, in different phases, starting from the 15th century. The walk explores the community’s history through their establishments, from business enterprises in Bunder and their residences in the lower Car Street area, to the religious institutions in the Car Street. We also speak about the myths, stories and living traditions that have become synonymous with Mangalorean culture today.
As we walk through some of the oldest streets in Mangalore, we explore how communities, distinguished by their religion, lived and traded in harmony, exemplifying the social fabric of Mangaluru.
