American history has many examples of citizens standing up, speaking their mind, and using their individual voices – together – to effect change at a higher level. Artists and people with creative vision are often leading the call for change. This workshop will be centered around these two things – improving the photographic skills of the participants and talking about how they can use those skills to become “The Eyes of River” and advocate for Milwaukee’s waterways and greenspaces!
This 5-session workshop will be comprised of two Wednesday night classroom sessions, two Saturday morning hikes in the Milwaukee River Greenway, and one Saturday evening event where photos from all the participants will be shown, and the photographers will be invited to speak for 4-7 minutes about their photography and the importance of being good stewards for our waterways.
We will be hiking with and learning from professional photographer and friend of Milwaukee’s Rivers, Troy Freund. Troy has over 20+ years of teaching adults photography! Class will be geared toward interchangeable lens cameras, however smartphones are welcome too. Expect to discuss lens types, ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.
If you have a passion for photography and for Milwaukee’s outdoors, and want to become a more active advocate for its good stewardship, this workshop is for you!
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
SESSION 1: CLASS
Participants will meet in-person on Wednesday 7/31 at the UW-School of Freshwater Sciences. In this class, we’ll delve into the inspiring mission of Milwaukee Riverkeeper, explore the critical issues we advocate for, and discuss the important role photography has in environmental conservation. Additionally, participants will get hands-on experience learning photography fundamentals and camera basics, setting the stage for capturing the beauty and importance of Milwaukee’s waterways and green spaces.
SESSION 2: HIKE
Participants will embark on a hike on Saturday 8/17 along the scenic Milwaukee River Greenway to practice the photography techniques learned in our first class. As we explore, we’ll also discuss the rich history of the Milwaukee River Greenway. (Meeting location will be provided during first class)
SESSION 3: CLASS
Participants will reconvene on Wednesday 8/28 at the UW-School of Freshwater Sciences to review and receive feedback on the photos taken during our hike along the Milwaukee River Greenway. This class will provide a supportive environment to discuss techniques, composition, and storytelling through photography. Expert feedback will help you refine your skills and gain new insights, enhancing your ability to advocate for Milwaukee’s waterways and green spaces through compelling imagery.
SESSION 4: HIKE
Participants will set out on a second hike on Saturday 9/7, exploring a different area of the Milwaukee River Greenway to offer a fresh perspective and a chance to apply the insights and feedback received from the previous class. Participants will continue to hone their photography skills, while deepening their connection to the Greenway and strengthening their visual storytelling techniques. (Meeting location will be provided in previous class)
SESSION 5: GALLERY NIGHT
Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their photos in a special evening event on Saturday 9/28. Each photographer will be invited to speak for 4-7 minutes about their work and the significance of being good stewards for our waterways. This celebration of visual storytelling will highlight the powerful role photography plays in advocating for Milwaukee’s natural spaces. Friends and family are welcome to join us for this inspiring event, where we will honor the creativity and dedication of our official “Eyes of the Rivers”. (Location TBD)
