Capoeira is a centuries-old cultural art form created during the Brazilian colonial period by enslaved Africans and their descendents in community with native peoples. It is a dynamic practice with elements of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, music, theatrics, ritual, and oral history. Its complexity can make it seem intimidating, but in reality it is a holistic and life-changing practice that should be accessible to anyone. This workshop will start with an introduction to some basic capoeira movement patterns. This includes the basic ginga, or dance movement, some ground moves and basic acrobatics (modifiable or optional altogether depending on comfort), the basic "game" concept and rituals, how to play a very simple Capoeira rhythm on percussion instruments, and one or two simple songs.
Next, we will learn the basic capoeira rhythm on percussion instruments, including the berimbau, or musical bow, and some basic capoeira songs. To finish the class, we will make a circle, or roda (HO-da), and go through the ritual of beginning songs before allowing anyone who would like to play to enter and play with a partner. For experienced students and absolute beginners, of any style, age, gender expression, or body type, it is a chance to interact and learn from each other in a joyful, safe manner.
The event will last 2 hours, and costs $25
