Capoeira is a centuries-old cultural art form created during the Brazilian colonial period by enslaved Africans and their descendents in community with native peoples. It is a dynamic practice with elements of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, music, theatrics, ritual, and oral history. Its complexity can make it seem intimidating, but in reality it is a holistic and life-changing practice that should be accessible to anyone.
This event will start with a short introduction to some basic capoeira movement patterns by Capivara (Brendan Loula), a Capoeirista with more than 20 years of experience. This includes the basic ginga, or dance movement, some ground moves and basic acrobatics (modifiable or optional altogether depending on comfort), the basic "game" concept and rituals, how to play a very simple Capoeira rhythm on percussion instruments, and one or two simple songs.
After the class, we will make a circle, or roda (HO-da), and go through the ritual of beginning songs before allowing anyone who would like to play to enter and play with a partner. For experienced students and absolute beginners, of any style, age, gender expression, or body type, it is a chance to interact and learn from each other in a joyful, safe manner.
There is no fee for this event, but participants are welcome to make a "conscious contribution" to help compensate for time, labor, and knowledge, with a suggestion of $5-10
