Carol Bean brings her encyclopedic blues knowledge and West Coast roots to the Capital Blues stage, fronting a powerhouse ensemble with Deane Hunter (guitar), Andrew Richardson (drums), Elliotte Fuimaono (bass), and Duncan Haynes (keyboard). Showcasing songs from blues legends like Ma Rainey, Elmore James, Memphis Minnie, and Jimmy Reed, alongside contemporary voices such as Etta James (from Carol’s hometown of Los Angeles), Eliza Gilkyson, Debbie Davies, and Angela Strehli from Austin, Texas. And yes—Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown is in the mix.Carol’s sets are known for their depth and feel—steamy slow burners, up-tempo grooves, and tunes you didn’t know you needed. She’s gathered bands like Blue Highways and The Dirty River Band, and has been a fixture in Wellington’s blues scene since 2008. Her credits include Lady Sings the Blues, Wild Women of Wellington, and ALL of the blues festivals in Aotearoa. Born in England and raised in LA, Carol was shaped by the West Coast music of the ’60s and the acoustic blues of Mississippi John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. She studied with Ry Cooder, who helped her acquire the vintage Martin guitar she still plays today. This gig is part of the Capital Blues Concert Series—Sunday afternoons built for listening, relaxing, and reconnecting. Come down, grab a drink, and settle in. Members discounts apply!Original Photo: Reef Reid
