Miria comes from a long line of influential wāhine Māori. Her namesake, Lady Mīria Pōmare (1877-1971), was a community leader who spent much of her life advocating for the benefits of both Māori and Pākeha. In 1918, Lady Mīria was appointed an OBE for her service to the Māori Soldiers’ Fund which was established to help provide soldiers with comfort (food, knitted garments, letters) while they were away from home. Lady Mīria Pōmare’s story is shared in a display in the Attic of Te Waka Huia.
Hear the life story of modern-day Miria’s tupuna and great Rangatira Kahe who was one of five women who signed Te Tiriti in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Nau mai, haere mai to hear more about this Mana Wāhine and her truly epic life.
