Join EarthWorks and Metro Vancouver as we install fencing to protect a sensitive patch of forest in Capilano River park!
About this Event

This section of forest was degraded by Hemlock looper moth damage (2019-2022), high visitor use, & off-trail activities. Last year, Capilano University students helped restore this patch of forest by planting native shrubs and trees along a decommissioned trail. With CapU Student volunteer help, we will be constructing fencing along the upper section of this area to discourage access into the recently restored site and to support the success of the forest’s regeneration. Healthy ecosystems are more resilient to the negative effects of climate change, such as future insect infestations and drought.

Where: Meet at the Cleveland Dam – Outside of the Public Washrooms near the kiosk:

What: Constructing a fence along the perimeter of a restoration site

When: March 4th, 2026

Time: 10:00AM – 12:30PM

Metro Vancouver will provide you with all the information and tools needed for the work we will be doing. This includes eye protection and gloves, although if people prefer to use their own gloves they are welcome to do so. Please arrive dressed for the weather (rain or shine), in warm clothing that can get dirty, with appropriate footwear. Please bring water bottles and a snack if you tend to get hungry while working. We will provide water to refill water bottles.

A few things to note about the site:

  • Attendees will need to be able to carry 10’ cedar beams (~15 lbs each) short distances, in pairs or on their own. We will be driving 6” spikes through the beams using hammers.
  • There is free parking on-site by the Cleveland Dam.
  • There is a washroom at our meeting place. The worksite is a 15min walk from the washroom building.

Please reach out to Lachlan McKinnon if you have any questions or concerns prior to the

event: [email protected] | (604)-803-3002.
