About this Event
The rocky shorelines and ponds here are classic sites to see all kinds of wintering birds from the Canadian Maritimes and High Arctic Archipelago. We meet at 8:30 a.m. along Gloucester Harbor at the famous Fisherman's Statue. We then visit the Jodrey Fish Pier to look over the gulls, loons and perhaps a Razorbill. This field trip will stop at different hotspots, giving us time to "warm up" as we drive to the next location.
Out on Eastern Point we will look over waterfowl by the lighthouse, before checking for diving ducks at Niles Pond. Several stops will be made as we go along Atlantic Road hoping to see Horned and Red-necked Grebes, Great Cormorants and many sea ducks. Going through Rockport we will stop at Granite Pier before parking at Halibut Point State Park. There we walk on trails by a deep water-filled quarry to the rocky coast. This is a top spot for a very local wintering site for a group of chestnut, blue and white Harlequin Ducks and such oceanic birds as Long-tailed Ducks and scoters, plus sometimes alcids, gannets and Black-legged Kittiwakes.
We return to Fisherman's Wharf around 12 noon and perhaps you'll join us at the Broadway Restaurant. Trip will be led by Peter Alden and likely other leaders.
All levels of birdwatching experience are welcome!
