(Nia DaCosta, 2021, USA/Canada, 91 minutes)For this reboot / spiritual sequel to the 1992 film of the same name, Candyman’s co-writer/director Nia DaCosta (on her last film before making Disney money on Captain Marvel) worked with a team of national treasures: Jordan Peele! Teyonah Parris! Colman Domingo! Our lead is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony, alongside his partner Brianna (Parris), who learn of the old Candyman lore established in the first film, with the contextual change of the public housing development from the first film being torn down and the neighborhood gentrified in the years since.
