Candlelight History Talks: The Lost Mythology of Celtic Goddesses

Discover Britain's forgotten mythic heroines, and why history left them out while Arthur and Merlin became legends.

What happened to the ancient tales of Britain’s enchanted heroines that stopped them rising to modern fame? Why do we know Arthur and Merlin, but not Arianrhod and Melusine?

In this talk, author and folklorist Kim Willis takes you on a storytelling journey through Britain’s forgotten goddesses, travelling from the Severn to Skye, Eryri to Northumberland, in search of the shape-shifting enchantresses, scaly nymphs and warrioresses who once commanded these lands.

Drawing on her book No Fair Maidens, you'll meet figures like Arianrhod, Melusine, Cerridwen and Gwendoline – stories buried by time, patriarchy and modernity, yet still carrying wisdom about grief and healing, sisterhood and sexuality, fertility and freedom. And through them ask how their stories came to be lost, and found again.

Speaker Bio:

Kim Willis is a folklorist and journalist who spent years travelling Wales, Scotland and England collecting the oldest myths and folktales of powerful heroines. Her best-selling book No Fair Maidens documents the stories of the lost goddesses of Britain, and she has designed storytelling strategies for Number 10 and the UN, written about wild places for the Guardian and was the founder of 'Heroine’s Journey' speaker series. She is based between London and South Wales.
