This presentation is a “plant-based” program based on work by composer Victoria Bond. It won the 2009 Walter Hinrichsen Award presented by the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. The work originally consisted of 7 musical descriptions of Peculiar Plants with poetic introductions presented by Janice Park and written by the composer and Kenneth Cooper. The pieces were written for harpsichord – for this program Terry has rearranged them to use as many of the keyboards in Trinity United Methodist Church as available. You really can’t do Strangler Fig and Creeping Moss with a plucked stringed instrument when you have great bass pipes available! And the Ghost Orchid needed the wispy voices available on the electronic keyboard. Closing the program will be memories of music for Roses and the Bach Fantasia in C.
Terry began organ studies at 9 taking lessons in a small northern Minnesota town and playing for local churches and bands studied at the University and then encountered the real world of “making a living’ and moved to textile design and production as the related visual art. She studied design and textile production at Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Basel Switzerland and Bradford College UK. She continued to live and work in Switzerland Belgium and Germany for the next 11 years before returning to the US all the while continuing her passion for pipe organs listening to as many grand and not so grand instruments. The journey continues with Trinity Methodist and textile clients in her studio in the woods in Quilcene WA. Exploring the elements relating to both arts continues to be her fascination – the presentation of texture structure and beauty as applied to both audial and visual expressions is an ongoing adventure.
Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 609 Taylor Street across from the Community Center in Uptown. Attendees should plan on arriving early – doors will open at 6:30. Masks are encouraged for in-person attendees.
