Building Bridges for the Greater Good will be holding a Candidate Forum for Staunton’s new Commonwealth Attorney, who will be chosen during the Virginia state elections on November 4 this year. Following a number of questions from the BBGG moderators, there will be some time for members of the public to ask policy-oriented questions of the candidates (no questions about specific cases). John Baber and Joseph Perry are running as independents for this office in Staunton. This forum will provide the public with the opportunity to meet the candidates and hear their views on vital issues, with the goal of enabling voters to make an informed choice, as their decisions and approach will shape our community for years to come.
In Virginia, the Commonwealth’s Attorney is an elected official who is the chief law enforcement officer, with the primary duty to prosecute all felonies and most misdemeanors charged within the jurisdiction. They advise citizens, law enforcement agencies and magistrates on interpretation of criminal law. Prosecutors must take action if they see an injustice, a violation of procedural law, or a violation of someone’s rights. They also can advance diversion programs, restorative justice, and alternative sentencing to seek justice and provide opportunities for rehabilitation, with important implications for rates of incarceration.
The all-volunteer community initiative, Building Bridges for the Greater Good, has long had an interest in the criminal legal system. This forum will take up some of the issues we explored during our 2021 series on mass incarceration and Middle River Regional Jail expansion.
