Let's talk about class in the arts!

Join us for an online panel discussion to explore how we can create a more inclusive environment in arts and culture for children and young people from low socio-economic or ‘working-class’ backgrounds.

During this event, you will hear from:

• Host Dr. Chrissie Tiller (Creative Consultant and Practitioner)
• Rhiannon White (Co-Artistic Director, Common Wealth)
• Bianca A. Manu (Writer and Curator of Public Programmes, Culture&)
• Michelle McGrath (Founder of Museum as Muck)

This event will give us a chance to reflect on:

• What we mean by working-class or low socio-economic status
• How we can support young people to have more ownership over arts and culture
• Best practice when working with local communities in arts and culture
• The barriers young people from low socio-economic backgrounds face when engaging with the arts and culture industry
• How we can consider the intersectionality of social class to create a more inclusive sector
• What people are doing to address structural change in the sector regarding social class and access to arts and culture

Those who attend will:

• Build an awareness of how to develop a more inclusive practice
• Explore language, definitions and ethical considerations around social class
• Learn about successful projects engaging children and young people from socioeconomic backgrounds
• Hear about honest and real examples in the industry from colleagues
• Have an opportunity to reflect on their own practice and ask questions to the room

This event is particularly relevant for anyone who is:

• Programming creative projects for children and young people
• Working in the delivery of creative activities with children and young people
• An artist or cultural organisation looking to develop their inclusive practice

Host Dr. Chrissie Tiller (Creative Consultant and Practitioner), who has extensive experience in participatory and community arts projects will guide us through an online workshop on Zoom. In this two-hour event, there will be a panel discussion with our speakers with an opportunity for participants to have small group discussions and ask questions to the speakers.

You will hear from speakers Rhiannon White (Co-Artistic Director, ) about theatre practice staged on-site within communities, Bianca A. Manu (Writer and Curator of Public Programmes, ) speaking on her experience of barriers young people face in the industry and Michelle McGrath (Founder of ) on how they work to address structural change in the industry, and the intersectionality of social class.
