Callaloo: Open Mic

Join us for Callaloo! Our bi-monthly open mic series!

Callaloo is an intimate open mic night set in the warmth of RWB Studios where Black voices and Afro-Caribbean culture are centered and celebrated. Like the dish itself, callaloo is nourishing, rich, grounding, and made to feed the body, and this space carries that same energy, offering something restorative for Black bodies and creative spirits.

Hosted by a national slam champion, Amoya Reé, the night blends poetry, storytelling, and music in a way that feels both easy and alive. When we share our stories, something shifts, voices layer, ideas spark, and a kind of collaboration forms in real time, each person adding their flavour to the pot. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or an adult finding your way back to the mic, you’ll find an encouraging room, real connection, and space to grow.

Amoya Reé (she/her) is a Jamaican-Canadian performance poet and 2018 Canadian National Slam Champion. Her writing is rooted in her lived experiences as a Black Woman, mother, & arts educator. Exploring the cultural significance of things like race, mothering and love, she often blends historical fact with present realities, making for a poetic experience that is both informational and inspirational.

Affectionately known as Reé, she sat as captain of the 2018 Toronto Poetry Slam team who were the 2nd Canadian team to ever reach semi-finals at the National Poetry Slam in Chicago and then went on to lead the team to victory at the Canadian National Championship in Guelph, Ontario. She has had featured performances at the coveted When Sisters Speak (2019) and at Toronto Poetry Slam (2019). Reé holds the 2021 Toronto Grand Slam Champion title and was awarded the 2023 Black Pearl award for her work in arts education and community programming, recognizing her as one of the top 100 Black Women to watch in Canada. Her debut spoken word album funded by the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts titled, “I Never Asked you to Love me” was released in March 2025.
