About the Exhibition
The San Diego Art Directory, in collaboration with Hera Hub Carlsbad, invites artists to submit work for “Space to Exhale,” an exhibition exploring sanctuary not as escape, but as intentional refuge in response to a world that often feels overwhelming, unstable, or relentlessly demanding.
In moments of collective uncertainty, the act of creating or seeking safety becomes purposeful. This exhibition asks artists to consider: What allows us to exhale—and why is that space necessary now? Where do care, protection, and restoration live when they must be actively cultivated rather than assumed?
Hera Hub Carlsbad is envisioned as more than a workspace—it is a sanctuary for creativity, collaboration, and care. This exhibition invites artists to interpret space to exhale expansively: through physical or imagined spaces, emotional and psychological landscapes, symbols of rest, boundaries, resilience, softness, or quiet strength.
Artists are encouraged to submit work that engages sanctuary with depth and intention—not merely as calm or beauty, but as an act of care, resistance, grounding, or renewal. Works may be subtle or bold, intimate or collective, contemplative or quietly powerful.
Artists of all backgrounds and identities are welcome.
Eligible Art:
- Only wall-hanging artwork is accepted.
- All mediums are welcome.
- The size is not to exceed 48" on the longer side (or in diameter for circle or irregular shape artworks).
- Since the artwork will be installed on a drywall in a co-working space, the weight of the artwork is a consideration for safety. Unusually heavy artworks will be juried out.
- All work must be wired and ready to hang or exhibit (no sawtooth hangers; unwired work will be juried out)
