The public is invited to join Yolo Bird Alliance for its monthly meeting on November 20, 2024. Cliff Feldheim, a Fish and Wildlife Biologist with Ducks Unlimited, Inc., will talk about “California’s Wintering and Breeding Waterfowl” This event is free, and you do not need to be a member of Yolo Bird Alliance. The meeting is held at the Davis Senior Center at 646 A Street in Davis. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. and runs until 8:50 p.m. People are welcome to arrive around 7:00 for casual socializing.
We are excited to have Cliff speak in November, coinciding with the peak season for observing migrating waterfowl and other birds in nearby wetlands like the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. The Central Valley of California is one of the key wintering grounds for waterfowl in North America, and it uniquely serves as a significant breeding habitat for certain duck species. Between 2014 and 2021, GPS transmitters were deployed on 14 waterfowl species to enhance our understanding of their movements during winter, migration, and breeding seasons. Cliff’s talk will share insights from this research, as well as ongoing conservation efforts and the challenges facing California’s waterfowl populations.
With over 30 years of experience as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist in the Central Valley, Cliff is a nationally recognized expert in waterfowl science and an award-winning researcher. In the past seven years, he has published 17 papers focused on California’s wintering and breeding waterfowl. At Ducks Unlimited, he is involved in conservation projects that not only support waterfowl and wetlands but also create multi-benefit habitats for salmon and other special-status species. Cliff served on the Management Board of the Central Valley Joint Venture for ten years, a partnership dedicated to migratory bird conservation. Currently, he sits on the Board of Sacramento Audubon as Conservation Chair and is a member of the Board of the Environmental Council of Sacramento, where he also contributes to the Habitat 2020 Committee.
The Yolo Bird Alliance fosters an appreciation of birds and other wildlife through educational programs and field trips, brings conservation issues to public awareness, and acts to preserve Yolo County bird life and habitat.
