About this Event

Our last showcase sold out with 145 people through the door, so we're back with a bigger room and a new lineup.

The name's a bit of a joke, by the way. There's no judging panel and no scorecards. Just a selection of Calgary's professional guitarists, a proper rhythm section, and two hours of great playing.

Here's how it works. Each guitarist plays a full set backed by Adam Dowling on drums and Justin Kudding on bass, the same rhythm section from the Summer Showdown (Vol. I). Sets are longer this time, so each player gets room to stretch out. At the end of the night everyone's on stage together for the finale, and Matty McKay will be joining them for that.

Playing on October 6:

Brennan Wall - lead guitarist for Brett Kissel, and lead guitarist and musical director for Jess Moskaluke. Brennan is the CCMA Guitarist of the Year for 2023 and 2024, Manitoba's Guitar Player of the Year in 2019, and has served as guitarist and MD for the CCMA Industry Awards Gala for the past three years. Originally from Winnipeg, now based in Calgary, his playing runs from jazz to metal to the country stages where his career took off.

Aaron Young - guitarist, composer, and producer. Aaron toured Asia, Scandinavia, the UK, and North America with the stage show Barrage, has produced and played on dozens of albums, and performs with Sillan & Young, The Polyjesters, and Monkeyking. Think Chet Atkins meets Mark Knopfler.

Jay Buettner - almost 30 years as a working guitarist. Jay toured Canada, the US, and Europe with Patricia Conroy, and has recorded and toured with Lisa Brokop, Aaron Pritchett, George Canyon, and Bobby Wills. He now writes and performs with New Yank Yorkies.

Aaron Shorr - jazz guitarist, composer, and bandleader. Aaron studied at Humber College and the University of Manitoba, then privately in New York with Peter Bernstein and Ben Monder. He's the musical director of Still Crazy: The Music of Paul Simon and released his debut album Omand's Creek in 2022.

Dan Clayton - singer and guitarist from the UK, now based in Calgary. Years of original bands back home (including support slots with Ash and Jon Fratelli), plus festival and corporate work, guitar teaching, and co-founding the Fret Success Guitar Show and Calgary Guitar Collective.

Doors at 6:30pm, music from 7 to 9pm. Prairie Dog's kitchen and bar are open all night, so come early and eat. Door prizes too. All ages welcome.

Tickets are $30 plus booking fee, limited to 250.

Proudly supported by R Guitars and Guitar O.R.
