Cakes & Canes - The Great Submission Bake-Off
There are few things more civilised than afternoon tea.
A beautifully laid table.
Fresh coffee and strong tea.
Homemade cakes.
Polite conversation.
Perfect manners.
And beneath it all:
Expectation.
Effort.
Pride.
Appreciation.
Perfection.
And then, in some more rare cases perhaps...
Hierarchy.
Responsibility.
Devotion.
Desire.
Mischief.
Discipline.
Cake & Canes transforms the tradition of afternoon tea into a playful exploration of service, leadership, hospitality, and the delicate art of receiving feedback gracefully.
Inspired equally by English tea culture, competitive baking shows, and ritualised etiquette, participants in the following role are invited to bring a cake prepared especially for the occasion. Each baker will formally present their offering to the room before it is inspected, tasted, and evaluated.
Throughout the afternoon, participants in the following role will serve tea and cake, attend to their partner, and help maintain the elegance of the salon. Participants in the leading role are invited to guide, observe, and evaluate, offering precise praise, thoughtful correction, and perhaps the occasional note for improvement.
After all, every baker secretly wants to know:
Was it good?
Did it bring joy?
Could it have been better?
Could I have done better?
And isn't there something strangely satisfying about hearing exactly where improvement is needed?
There will be formal presentations and inspections. Each baker will receive both praise and one carefully chosen note for improvement. In the final challenge, participants in the following role must discover what their partner truly wants and serve it with attention, elegance, and care.
There may be rewards.
There may be consequences.
There may be canes.
There will certainly be cake.
Prizes will be awarded with shameless seriousness.
Everything unfolds with warmth, humour, and explicit consent. Each couple agrees on its own boundaries around touch, inspection, public attention, correction, and impact. No one will be made fun of or humiliated in ways they are not comfortable with.
But beneath the playfulness, this is still serious play.
Can we remain present while our efforts are being examined?
Cream or jam first?
Can we take pride in what we have made without becoming attached to the verdict?
Can service become generous and beautiful?
Can corrections be received as a gift?
And have tea tables always been stages for ritual and hierarchy?
Come hungry. Come prepared. And mind your manners.
This event will be a great place to practise all the knowledge and insights you may have gathered at previous KNEEL events, this time in a more humorous setting. But you do need to have attended at least one previous KNEEL event.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This is a couples event.
This evening—and the KNEEL series—is for everyone who is curious about exploring power exchange as more than a dynamic. As a practice. As serious play. As a way of cultivating presence, intimacy, and conscious connection. And as a way of exploring who we are as humans and as social beings longing to belong.
THE KNEEL SERIES
This event is part of the KNEEL series by Anso Vela and Jac Fabian: six immersive workshops, rituals, dinners, and social experiences exploring power. They are for couples and run from September to December 2026. You can join one, some, or all events.
CAN I JOIN AS A BEGINNER?
Yes, you can. But be aware that the KNEEL series is not a step-by-step introduction. We explore together in many different ways. We ask questions and discover answers through exercises, play, and reflection. You may learn a great deal about what power exchange means to you, as we focus on why and how we bring ourselves more fully into moments of connection and leadership.
DO I NEED A PARTNER?
Yes. You need to sign up as a pair, and at each KNEEL event one person takes the following role and one the leading role. You cannot attend without a partner. You do not need to be romantic partners, but you should be comfortable exploring this form of connection together.
At the opening of the evening, we facilitate a conversation where you agree on your boundaries for the day and decide together to what extent you may be open to engaging with others.
DRESS CODE
Wear something that makes this feel like a truly special afternoon—elegant, beautiful, and expressive. Please avoid everyday, office, or street clothes. We ask everyone to respect the dress code.
