About this Event
This is an adult program. Class attendees must have an active library account with borrowing privileges. Both classes will take place in the Main Branch Maker Space. Attendees should register for both sessions. If you would like to attend as a group, attendees should still register individually so that we can verify the library accounts.
First Class:
During the first class, students will check out a decorating kit, two cake pans, parchment liners, and a laminated piping guide. They will also receive a piping bag with tinted frosting for additional practice, the box of cake mix that they selected, and a booklet of recipes for cakes, frosting, etc. Attendees will learn the basics of baking a cake, adding color to decorating frosting, filling a piping bag, and piping using printed guides. They will be instructed to bake their cake mix for the next class, and practice the piping techniques at home. Participants must provide the ingredients necessary to bake the cake mix (eggs, oil, water or milk). The next class takes place 1 week later.
Second Class:
Attendees should bring two baked cake layers (returning the pans they have checked out). They will be provided with a box to take their decorated cake home. Students will assemble their cake layers, add a crumb-coat, and apply a smooth layer of frosting around the cake. They will then decorate the cake as they choose, using the piping techniques that they have practiced. Photos of the completed cakes will be displayed in both the library and library social media. The checked-out decorating kits should also be returned at the end of the class.
