About this Event
Join Ulises, in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia and CAICU, for a conversation between project curator Marángeli Mejía-Rabell and artists Celso Gonzalez, Angurria, Dan One, Calo Rosa, and the Taína Sisters. The team will discuss the inspiration and production of their soon to be dedicated mural at Front & Susquehanna (formerly the Fine Fare Supermarket) and their effort to honor the rich history and Caribbean heritage of the Norris Square community, our Kensington neighbors.
CAICU is a socially-engaged public art and cultural organizing series led by Philadelphia-based curator Marángeli Mejía-Rabell and Puerto Rico-based muralist Celso Gonzalez in Philadelphia’s Norris Square neighborhood and Loiza, Puerto Rico. Recently, rapid real estate development in Philadelphia has led to displacement disproportionately impacting Black and Latino/a/x communities. In response, artists and community leaders in Norris Square have galvanized to strengthen community and public awareness of the neighborhood’s history and identity. CAICU will bring new dimensions to this process through public art and by fostering cultural exchanges with Loíza, Puerto Rico through the Summer of 2025.
Light refreshments provided.
