This summer, Valletta Waterfront is introducing a new weekly cultural attraction that blends theatre, folklore and fantasy into an imaginative celebration of Malta's rich maritime heritage.
Launching on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, and continuing every Tuesday at 7.30pm, Cagliostro & The Pirate Queen – The Secret Story of Malta will transform the historic waterfront promenade into an open-air stage with a 20-minute live performance that is free to watch.
Rather than offering a traditional historical re-enactment, the weekly production presents "The Secret Story of Malta"—a fictional, theatrical tale inspired by the island's colourful past.
Drawing on the legends of knights, corsairs, alchemists and seafarers, it imagines the stories that history never wrote down, inviting audiences to experience Malta through myth, mystery and live performance.
At the heart of the story are two larger-than-life characters: the enigmatic Count Alessandro Cagliostro, whose time in Malta continues to intrigue historians and storytellers alike, and the formidable Pirate Queen, a fictional heroine who embodies the daring spirit of the Mediterranean corsair era.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Grand Harbour, the production combines period costumes, music and theatrical storytelling with Valletta Waterfront's historic surroundings, creating an immersive experience where the harbour itself becomes part of the stage.
Designed as an accessible cultural experience, the show has been created with both visitors and local audiences in mind. Its concise format makes it an ideal addition to an evening exploring Valletta, Floriana or the Three Cities, or families enjoying an evening by the sea.
The weekly performances also reinforce Valletta Waterfront's role as a cultural destination, encouraging visitors to linger by the harbour, experience live entertainment and enjoy the Waterfront's many restaurants and bars after the show. After twenty minutes of storytelling and spectacle, audiences can continue their evening with a relaxed meal overlooking one of the Mediterranean's most iconic harbours.
As twilight settles over the bastions each Tuesday evening, audiences will discover that some of Malta's most memorable stories are not found in history books—but in the imagination.
This spectacle is produced by Ronald Briffa, written by Sean Buhagiar and performed by Jeremy Grech, Analise Mifsud, and Sean Briffa.
Admission is free, the performance lasts approximately 20 minutes, and the event is suitable for the whole family, with drink or dinner opportunities available at the different restaurants across the Valletta Waterfront.
