(Hong Sangsoo, 2024, South Korea, 111 minutes)
Famously prolific South Korean director Hong Sangsoo, who had a new film on our screen three times in 2024 alone (in water in January, In Our Day in May, A Traveler’s Needs in December), somehow has not been represented so far in 2025. We’re happy to finally address that deficiency with By the Stream, reuniting him with frequent star Kim Minhee (outside of her work with Hong, best known for Chan-wook Park’s The Handmaiden), who here plays a scandalized artist and lecturer who enlists her blacklisted uncle (Kwan Haehyo, recently of A Traveler’s Needs and Walk Up) to direct a play at her university. We’ve been happy to watch the local audience for Hong grow as we’ve shown each successive release of his, and if after By the Stream you find yourself itching for a fix, fear not—his new-new film, What Does That Nature Say to You, is premiering at the New York Film Festival at about the same time we’re running this one.
In Korean with English subtitles.
