Molly creates mixed media artworks which make inventive use of recycled materials. At HDG we love the texture and 3-dimensionality of these works, and encourage you to come and enjoy them in person.

About Molly Finn

Molly transforms discarded materials into compelling mixed-media works that blur the boundaries between two dimensional art and sculpture. Drawing inspiration from studio remnants and unexpected finds at hardware stores, she employs unconventional materials to build up textured surfaces that give her two-dimensional works a distinctly sculptural presence. Her practice is rooted in exploration and expression—investigating how different manipulations of material can reveal new aesthetic possibilities while contemplating the significance of the series or piece to her personally.

In her recent textile series, Molly excavates personal history through fabric, incorporating denim remnants from a quilt crafted by her mother. These works become meditations on lineage, weaving together two distinct family traditions: her maternal line of seamstresses and the abstract expressionist legacy of her paternal grandmother. By fusing fabric onto panels, she creates a visual dialogue between these inherited practices, transforming familial craft traditions into contemporary art. The resulting compositions explore the interplay of softness through billowing forms, controlled chaos through deliberately unorganized arrangements, and in some the discipline of repetition that shaped her upbringing.

Her hardware store streamer series confronts themes of loss and transition with raw honesty. The anchor piece, "The Party is Over," captures the aftermath of celebration—that liminal moment when excitement dissipates, leaving behind remnants of joy entangled with the inevitable mess of processing change. Through these vibrant, ephemeral materials, Molly examines how we navigate the emotional debris that follows life's peak moments.

Molly received her degree in Studio Art from Franklin & Marshall College, with formative study periods in Florence, Italy, and at the former San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She maintains her studio at Art Bias in San Carlos, having previously worked from spaces in Belmont, including the former 1870 Art Center. Through her material investigations and personal excavations, Molly continues to forge new visual languages that honor both tradition and transformation.
