About this Event

Join us for a compelling Black History Month presentation exploring the Elgin Settlement — known as Buxton — one of the most celebrated destinations on the Underground Railroad and a National Historic Site of Canada.

Our presenter, Allister Coward (Executive Director of ), brings this history to life. Through his work with , Allister has dedicated himself to sharing the stories of African Canadian communities that helped shape this country.

Founded in 1849 by Reverend William King, Buxton welcomed freedom seekers and free Black families who built schools, industries, and a thriving community of over 1,000 people. The integrated Mission School produced teachers, doctors, lawyers, and politicians. Their legacy endures in North Buxton to this day.

This is a free, all-ages community event hosted by PARC.
