About this Event
Buxton Hill Walks
Come join us for a scenic stroll through the beautiful hills of Buxton, starting and ending at The Zink Project. Enjoy the fresh air, stunning views, and good company as we explore the local hills and trails together.
On this our very last Buxton Hill Walk of the season, we are meeting with local historian Alan Roberts to explore the landscape and the effects of local history on it.
Alan Roberts came to Buxton many years ago as a research scientist to work at what is now the HSE site at Harpur Hill. While working at this large open site on the edge of town, he developed a keen interest in the local landscape and the signs of past industrial activities on the landscape, such as former coal mines on Axe Edge, limestone quarrying and the network of roads created to support them. He has written several books on these topics.
We will head from Zink over to Macclesfield Old Rd to view the site of the Cromford & High Peak Railway, giving us the opportunity to reflect on the impact of mining and lime burning on our hills. On our return we will climb up to Solomon's Temple one last time, making a short descent through Grin Low woods to return to Zink. Weather permitting, we will share some treats at Solomon's Temple to celebrate the last walk of the year.
