On Sunday, June 7 at 3 pm, the Ottawa community will come together to experience the Butterfly Memorial Event, by BFO-Ottawa. Come in person for the ceremony at Beechwood, Canada's National Cemetery, to remember our loved ones.
Release a Live Butterfly in memory of a loved one...
Each spring, Bereaved Families of Ottawa holds a special community memorial and fundraising event. The event is open to the public. Pre-registration is required if you would like to purchase a butterfly to release in honour of your loved one.
Can't attend? Please consider making a donation to help someone who is not financially able to attend.
The event begins with a memorial ceremony in the Sacred Space inside the Beechwood National Memorial Center. This part of the event features live music, with speakers on hand, and an opportunity for participants to speak the names of their loved ones who have died.
From the memorial ceremony, we move to the hill overlooking the garden and pond, to share a symbolic release of live painted lady butterflies. These beautiful butterflies are a symbol of hope and transformation, and the simultaneous release of them is magical.
Our guest speaker is Shawn Fisk.
Shawn Fisk is a nationally recognized substance use health, mental health, and compassionate care expert. He is accredited as a Master Addiction Counsellor and Concurrent Disorder Specialist and brings more than twenty years of experience navigating these systems for his own needs.
He is the Founder of Dignity First Collective, an organization dedicated to creating systems of care that act unconditionally, and Senior Manager of Strategic Partnerships at CAPSA, Canada's national substance use health organization working to reduce stigma and improve health outcomes for people and families across the country.
Shawn's expertise is inseparable from his personal experience with loss related to substance use health and mental health. At this event, he speaks from both sides of that truth. That is what brought him to this work. That is what has kept him here.
You will receive a tax receipt for $25 of the ticket price of $45.
100% of the ticket price proceeds goes towards providing BFO's grief support programs.
