Join us at the Bushwakker Writer’s Corner 8th Edition Author Reading where we celebrate the talents of local authors Bruce Rice, Iryn Tushabe, Melanie Schnell, Michael Trussler, and Suzy Krause. This event is hosted by local author Shane Arbuthnott. Bushwakker will have local food, drinks, and a special dessert for sale while we make ourselves cozy in the year-round Writer’s Corner found near the back of the brewpub.
This event is in partnership with Bushwakker Brewpub. This event is in-person only and will not be livestreamed or recorded.

About the Bushwakker Writer’s Corner:
Bushwakker is seeking donations of recent publications (2023-25 publication dates) from Saskatchewan authors in all genres to help expand their library within the Writer’s Corner. The books will be available for patrons to read and are to remain in the brewpub at all times.
To be considered for the library, books must be a minimum of 40 pages and professionally bound.
Please drop off a copy of your recently published book (along with purchasing information which can be shared with brewpub patrons) to Grant Frew at [email protected].

Accessibility measures in this event:
• (TBD) A read-along copy of the authors' reading available during the live event only
• Presenter self-descriptions
• All authors will use a microphone when speaking
• Wheelchair accessible venue (access from rear, stair access from front door)
• Many non-alcoholic beverage options are available for purchase
• Free admission
• Patrons must be 19+ with valid ID

Meet our event artists:
Bruce Rice is a previous Saskatchewan Poet Laureate and essayist. Prairie Fire has called him “a poet of potent and unexpected thought.” His first nonfiction book Standstill: A Hopewell Earthworks Daybook and Other Essays (Long Road Press 2024) was nominated for two Saskatchewan Book Awards. Standstill asks how we can respond authentically to these ancient and still-living Indigenous places. There’s a reclaiming of stories of those who have lost their power of speech—enough to fill a village—and of art that has literally saved lives. Bruce lives in Regina on Treaty 4 Territory and the homeland of the Métis.

Iryn Tushabe is a Ugandan-Canadian writer and journalist. Most recently her nonfiction has appeared in The Walrus and in the trace press anthology river in an ocean: essays on translation. Her short fiction has been included in The Journey Prize Stories: The best of Canada’s New Writers. She was a finalist for the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2021, and a 2023 winner of the Writers’ Trust McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. Tushabe’s work won the City of Regina writing Award in 2020 and 2024. Everything is Fine Here (House of Anansi, 2025) is her debut novel.

Melanie Schnell is an award-winning author and Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Regina. She has written for television, and has published poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. The Chorus Beneath Our Feet is her second novel.

Michael Trussler is a neurodivergent writer who works primarily in poetry and creative non-fiction. His writing has been anthologized both domestically and internationally. He has received Saskatchewan Book Awards for poetry, non-fiction and short stories. His memoir concerning mental illness, The Sunday Book, was published by Palimpsest Press in 2022. His most recent poetry collections are Realia (Radiant Press, 2024) and 10:10 (Goose Lane Press, 2024). He teaches English at the University of Regina.

Suzy Krause is an author from the Saskatchewan prairies. Her most recent novel, I Think We've Been Here Before, has been optioned for film and shortlisted for four Saskatchewan Book Awards. Her books have been translated into Russian and Estonian and all of them have been Amazon First Reads picks.

Host
Shane Arbuthnott is the author of Guardians of Porthaven, as well as the Molly Stout series. His novels have been nominated for multiple awards, including the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize for his debut novel, Dominion. His short fiction has appeared in On Spec and Open Spaces. Shane grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and now lives in Regina with his family. For more information on Shane and his books, visit www.shanearbuthnott.com.
