About this Event
Join Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter and Utah Native Plant Society in a Xerces Society Bumble Bee Atlas Survey training. Bumble Bee Atlas is a community science project aimed at gathering data to protect and conserve bumble bees. We will begin with an indoor presentation on Bumble Bee Atlas protocols and then head outside to practice our field skills. Participants will learn how to safely net bumble bees, transfer them to vials, photograph them, and release them. We will also walk through how to complete the BBA data sheet. Please note that this is not a comprehensive training. Participants should attend or watch the and review the ahead of the field training.
Training will take place both inside the EcoCenter and in the field collecting specimens and data. Participants will learn about collection protocol before heading out onto the Preserve to collect bumble bee specimens.
- Vials and nets will be provided for the field portion of the training.
- Bring a notebook or note taking device for the classroom portion of the training.
- Wear hiking shoes or boots, and be prepared for uneven ground on the Swaner wetlands. Collection may also take place near the EcoCenter in the demonstration garden.
