Buildings of Change: Keynote Talk for NPT's Houses of Change Tour

A work of architecture is never truly finished. In big and small ways, its users continue to reshape it. Changing times and tastes and fortunes leave their mark on individual buildings, while neighborhoods and communities grow or shrink. Adaptation to new uses allows obsolete structures to continue to function, either as a matter of frugality or because they are valued for their design or meaning. Often, the most interesting places are those that have many layers of meaning.
