Building on Student Strengths in the Math Classroom

Supporting all learners to reach high levels requires first discovering what students know and then building on those strengths. This workshop will explore strategies for uncovering the strengths students bring into the classroom that can be used to grow students toward new learning.

We will shift our mindset away from identifying what students don’t know and, instead, focus on the skills they already have. We will spend time exploring skills to consider all the knowledge and strengths students will need to access new learning, and then plan “bridges” to connect current student knowledge to new content.

Every child has strengths. Every child has valuable knowledge which serves as a foundation for new learning. Rather than focusing on what students “can’t do yet”, we will shift the focus to thinking about what students already know how to do and then consider the next step needed to advance them toward new learning. This approach ensures all students are provided with equitable access to new learning experiences and content.

Who Should Attend:

This workshop is designed for educators and leaders at the elementary level. If you teach math, support teachers who teach math, or support students who learn math, this session is for you.

What to Expect:

In this workshop, we will:

• examine skills through the lenses of (1) what students will learn how to do and (2) what students need to know to be ready for this new learning
• strategies to uncover what students already know
• language and methods we can use to build on student knowledge and advance them to new learning

Cancellation Policy - Cancellations made before the payment settles (usually within 24 hours) will be 100% refunded. Cancellations made 7 calendar days or more in advance of the event date, will receive a 90% refund. Cancellations made less than 7 days of the event will receive a 75% refund.
