While visual supports are widely recognised within Universal Design for Learning, for people with cognitive or communication disabilities they are not optional. They are essential. This talk explores how we build visual supports into the fabric of everyday environments and recognise the impact they have on the more than 1.5 million Australians who rely on them to understand information, navigate daily life and participate in their communities.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: JENN WINSTONE

Jenn Winstone is a speech therapist and co-founder of MyComms, a digital platform designed to make visual supports easier to create, personalise and share across everyday environments. MyComms has been recognised through the NSW MVP Program as an emerging innovation supporting communication accessibility.

Jenn’s work focuses on supporting neurodivergent people and individuals with communication or cognitive disabilities who process spoken information differently and may experience barriers understanding routines, expectations and everyday communication. Visual supports have long been central to her practice, but her work increasingly explores a broader question: not just how we create visuals, but how we design systems that make communication supports sustainable across homes, schools, services and communities.

Drawing on clinical experience, research and lived insights from the people and families she works alongside, Jenn is known for challenging long held assumptions about communication supports. Her work focuses on solutions that consider not only the individual, but also the social ecosystem around them.
