Building an Intercultural City

Event description

Imagine a city, a vibrant, energy giving, life giving, affirming place. A city where people of all ages, of different ethnicities and cultures do not simply observe each other from afar, but interact, supporting each other when life is hard, and celebrating together when life is good. A city where, if you follow a religion or not, whether you’re interested in sport or not, whether you like music and the arts or not, there is plenty to celebrate. And you do not just enjoy your own festivals and interests but also participate in what others celebrate. Imagine Leicester is that city, an intercultural city.

On 3rd March, there is an opportunity to gather with like-minded people at Leicester Cathedral, from 2:00 to 4:00pm. We will:

· Hear more about the concept of Leicester as an intercultural city.

· Hear from young people about their views, hopes and aspirations for Leicester.

· Identify quick wins – what we can do now to develop Leicester as an intercultural city.

· Discuss blue-sky ideas – what we can do with further funding to develop Leicester as an intercultural city. The hope is that people will commit to working together to source funding for the blue-sky ideas.

Discussion groups

There will be an opportunity to join one of three discussion groups:

1. Oversight, whose focus is that real equality is actively sought by preventing discrimination and adapting the city’s governance, institutions and services to the needs of a diverse population.

2. Strategic, whose focus is ensuring diversity is seen positively, as a resource. Going forward, this group will meet to share best practice, exchange ideas and drive change, for example through workforce education and resourcing.

3. Tactical, whose focus is on delivering meaningful interaction between diverse individuals and groups and active citizenship and participation. This group will need to develop a workplan and collaborate in sourcing funding to deliver these aims.
