Jill Maybry, MBG
Tropical/Seasonal Curator
This month we welcome Jill Maybry to the Memphis Herb Society to share the story of the Jim Strickland Youth Education and Tropical Plant House at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Her presentation, “Building a Tropical Forest in West Tennessee,” will reveal the nuts and bolts of creating this wonderful MBG resource. She worked closely on this project, resulting in a 3,400-square-foot greenhouse and educational space, which opened in spring of 2024.
Jill’s talk will also cover how the tropical plants and trees were selected and planted—and she promises to give us the “herb-y angle” on this project.
About our speaker:
Jill was born and raised in midtown Memphis, TN. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Samford University in Birmingham, AL. She worked for many years at the Memphis Zoo, planning the display beds and caring for the tropical plant collection.
Jill has been working at the Memphis Botanic Garden since 2019, first overseeing the Pollinator Garden, and now as the Curator of the Tropical Plant House & Seasonal Displays. She is a regular speaker and writer on gardening topics, including talks about butterfly and hummingbird gardens, small container gardening at the historic Elmwood Cemetery, and as a past speaker for the MHS! She is also a frequent guest on the gardening series, “The Family Plot,” on WKNO.
Please be sure to join us this month!
NOTE: Guests are welcome to tour the Jim Strickland Youth Education and Tropical Plant House from 5-6:00 p.m. Not a guided tour.
